Meet your SUETA President, Jonathan Sumner….

Jonathan Sumner has been interested in education and computers since high school.  The pull of computers has become not only a major hobby but a career path in education.  Graduating in 1989 from Andrews University with his teaching credentials, he took his first teaching position in a small school in Wisconsin.

During the frigid winters he developed software that utilizes lasers and bar codes with lesson plans and grading.  The unique system is still in use by a few teachers.  He also ran one of the 10,000 Bulletin Board Services in the nation prior to the internet taking off.  A few years later he became one of the eight pilot teachers for the AE21 program using satellite instruction and integrated curriculum.  The experience transformed him from a survivalist teacher into a big proponent of integrating learning with technology.  In fact, he spent several summers assisting in curriculum design with AE21.  Along the journey he was asked to become the Lake Union TDEC representative.

Today, he has a master’s degree in administration and supervision and is the EdTech Director for A. W. Spalding Elementary in Collegedale, Tennessee.  Here he enjoys building the technology program, caring for 185 computers, designing curriculum, and teaching computer classes to 434 students.  Computer skills are embedded in classroom curriculum that is project based.  You’ll also find keyboarding, Legos, and cameras being taught as well.  Currently, he is serving on TDEC as the Southern Union Representative and as our resident SUETA president.
